The documents defining tasks and duties of health service to be carried out in war and similar calamitous events are presented. The major problems arising in the above mentioned situations are described and three variants of health care organization proposed, as follows: (1) adapting existing hospitals to meet the new conditions; (2) transferring medical teams to the disaster area; (3) setting up a field hospital. A field hospital can offer either surgical or general medical care. A team of surgeons may be established to act independently as a field triage station for surgical cases. The paper describes in detail the objectives and functions of the field hospital and deals with the construction of hospital teams and equipment of particular hospital units. Hospital headquarters organizes the duties and monitors the performance of the field hospital units. To carry out their work efficiently, the hospital staff should have experienee in the field and be familiar with their tasks and duties. It is mandatory to make a careful choice of instruments drugs and medical supplies packed in special trunks.
