Introduction: Smoking prevalence among health professionals is becoming a serious issue. The study aimed at identifying the factors associated with tobacco use in health professionals.
Methods: A systematic literature review related to smoking prevalence among health professionals and factors associated with tobacco use in health professionals was conducted. The databases searched were CINAHL, PubMed, and SpringerLink. In addition, Google Scholar was used. The keywords smoking prevalence among health professionals, prevalence of smoking, nurses, professionals, tobacco use, smokers, health professionals yielded 13 results that met the inclusion criteria and were used in the final analysis. PRISMA methodology was used to review databases and select the relevant articles. Meta-synthesis was conducted to analyze the obtained data.
Results: A total of 23 codes were identified and grouped into four substantive categories: (1) tobacco control, (2) social factors associated with tobacco use, (3) economic factors associated with tobacco use, and (4) awareness of the importance of promoting non-smoking behavior among health professionals. Most frequently used methods in quantitative analysis were bivariate analysis (chi-square test, t-test), and multivariate analysis.
Discussion and conclusion: Tobacco use among health professionals is associated with socio-economic factors, age, gender, lower education qualifications, lower income, and work environment. It is important to maintain and develop programs that promote non-smoking and encourage health professionals to act as role models.
