Abstract

The article describes the 250 years long history of the Midwifery School in Ljubljana and its significance to health educational and pedagogical fields. It exposes its role in the creation of gynaecological-obstetrical doctrine and terminology until the foundation of the Medical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana (1945), and its impact on the development of gynaecology and obstetrics in Slovenia. It describes the work of the important teachers and professors of obstetrics at the Midwifery School in Ljubljana. With their knowledge of obstetrics and general medicine of that time they exceeded the range of Ljubljana and its Midwifery School and influenced the development of obstetrics and medicine in Europe. The article presents the development and the duration of midwifery education in particular periods, and the transition to the regulated profession of a graduate midwife as determined within the European Union. It presents data about the number of educated midwives for each respective period: from 1857, when reliable data became available, until 1984 (2630 midwives), and from 1996 until 2003 (108 graduate midwives from the higher professional education study programme).
