Prevalence of urinary incontinence in physically active women and sportswomen – literature review

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to present the results of literature survey of the occurrence of urinary incontinence in physically active women and athletes, kinds of sports and physical activities are most often accompanied by urine incontinence, and which daily activies are most often accompanied by urinary incontinence. Literature search was performed manually and from electronical databases and was limited to English and Slovenian languages and to articles from January 1985 to June 2002. In accordance with inclusive and exclusive criteria 8 studies were included into literature survey. The results revealed that the occurrence of urinary incontinence fall between 20 % and 80 % and that women engaged in highly activities, have urinary incontinence symptoms more often. Running, highly aerobics, gymnastics and basketball are those sports which are most often accompanied by urinary incontinence. Most often daily activities accompanied by urinary incontinence were: coughing, sneezing, laughing and lifting of heavy burdens. The study revealed that almost half of physically active women and sportswomen complain about symptoms of urinary incontinence.
