Abstract

The article presents the results of a research study performed in the frames of the Local Action Group for drug prevention in the municipal community Kamnik. The research study included 1049 elementary school pupils from 5th to 8th grade. The results reveal that smoking is more frequent among boys than among girls. 48 % of 15-years olds have experience with smoking. Almost two thirds of the pupils state that the main reason to try smoking was curiosity. Most of the parents do not allow their children to smoke. Most of the pupils are informed about harmful consequences of smoking. Nearly one third are of the opinion that smoking is not discussed enough in school. Most of the pupils spend their free time with friends (especially girls), followed by sporting activities (especially boys). The results of the Rosenberg self-respect scale show 15-year olds feel more positive about themselves than 15-years old girls. In the frames of the group as a whole, special attention was dedicated to the group of 60 boys and 41 girls who smoked more than 5 times. The results show that in this group, more parents smoke and are less present at home. The children spend more time with other smokers, spend their free time more passively, do not practice sports and in almost all indices show less positive feelings towards themselves.
