Pain relief in patients in the intesive care unit of the hospital for infectious diseases
Abstract
Pain is an individual experience with physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspect. In spite of mounting evidence that pain is a health hazard, many patients still do not have access to proper pain relief therapy. The reasons for this are poor knowledge and ignorance of pain, fear from analgetics dependence or the inability to assess pain due to the patient’s state. The authors present recognition and assessment of pain in the Intensive Care Unit, as well as subjective and objective indices of pain. The importance of familiarity with physiological and behavioral response to pain in patients who can not communicate neither verbally nor non-verbally is stressed. Interventions of nursing care for pain relief in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases of the Hospital Center in Ljubljana and the importance of attention to the efficiency of pain relief are described.Downloads
