Standards of nursing care of vascular access in hemodialysis

Abstract

Substitute hemodialysis treatment represents a big risk of infection. The most exposed sites for infection are vascular access points. The preparation of vascular access points for hemodialysis is a demanding procedure requiring specific knowledge, as well as clear instructions and criteria encompassed in the standards of nursing care. All this enables a unified practice of nursing care, assures its quality and safety of the patient. The article presents standards for two most often used modes of vascular access: arteriovenous fistula and central venous catheter.
