Abstract

The article presents the role of a nurse in preparation of a patient for surgical procedure involving female reproductive organs; the role of a nurse as a performer of nursing care, patients’ advocate, educator, counselor, motivator of change and last, but not least, as a person providing support and help. Different aspects of preparation for surgery are described: psychological, physical and administrative. The results of the inquiry carried out on 83 female patients who have has a reproductive system operation at the Gynecology Hospital in Ljubljana revealed that the role of a nurse in preparation of a patient for a surgical procedure is very important. For the patients, holistic preparation which is carried out but not always, is very important. In the frames of psychological, most patients (73 %) stressed the importance of communication, but the lack of intimacy was described as the most disturbing circumstance (69 %). Among professional roles of a nurse, the role of a patient’s advocate was most often stressed (42 %), followed by the role of a teacher and counselor (38 %), a person providing support and help (12 %) and as the least important role nursing care was described (8 %). This opens a new research question: patients understand the role of a nurse as primarily a provider of nursing care and at the same time expect something more form her, something which is hidden inside her other roles.
