Abstract

Research in Slovenia show that secondary school students represent a great potential in blood donation. More than half of the young population is willing to donate blood, however nobody has summoned them to do so yet. Therefore, adequate incentives are needed to direct them to the altruistic path of blood donation. The influence of the promotion of the blood donation on the rise of the number of blood donors among the students in Celje is presented in the article. The data have been obtained by the retrospective review of the annual reports of the Local Organisation of the Red Cross Celje and the Department of transfusion of Celje General Hospital, in the period from 1987 to 2006. Over the ten-year period (1996–2006) promotion of the blood donation in the secondary schools in Celje there was a hundred per cent increase in the number of the students – blood donors. Most students-blood donors come from secondary technical and vocational schools. Among grammar school students and students of the secondary school of Nursing there had been a high number of students – blood donors even before the promotion of the blood donation started. Most students are benevolent to the lectures of the blood donation in the secondary schools. However, even more students could be attracted to blood donation by additional, modern forms of the promotion in which students would take an active part.
