Introduction: Olfactory training is a non-pharmacological, non-surgical and cost-effective method of treating patients with olfactory disturbances due to various indications. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of olfactory training in patients with olfactory dysfunction.
Methods: A descriptive method was used to conduct a systematic literature review in the Web of Science, CINAHL, and Pubmed databases between 2019 and 2022. The search used a combination of the following keywords: olfactory training, olfactory rehabilitation, anosmia. Primary sources were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search process and selection of studies are illustrated using the PRISMA diagram. Thematic analysis was performed by coding the results.
Results: We retrieved 253 hits from the entire pool of results. Among these, 6 quantitative studies describing the use and effects of olfactory training for the treatment of olfactory dysfunction were included for the final analysis. The results of the literature search were critically appraised using the JBI tools (JBI, 2020). The main content areas highlighted were the outcomes of olfactory training and the characteristics of olfactory training.
Discussion and conclusion: Olfactory training has a significant impact on the return and improvement of olfaction, and is an effective support for olfactory rehabilitation. For future research in this field, we suggest
focusing on the areas of discrimination and olfactory perception after the application of olfactory training.
