Title: »Development of midwifery over time: experiences, challenges and visions for the future«
In academic year 2026/2027, we celebrate 30 years of academic education of midwives in Slovenia, which represents an important milestone in the development of midwifery as an independent and professional profession. Over the past three decades, education has developed in close connection with clinical practice, research and international guidelines, and has significantly contributed to the development of the midwifery profession, the competencies of midwives and, last but not least, the quality of perinatal care for women, newborns and families.
To mark this important anniversary, we would like to highlight the development of midwifery education in Slovenia, present key achievements, and open a discussion on current and future challenges and opportunities for the development of the profession with a thematic issue of the Slovenian Nursing Journal entitled "Development of midwifery over time: experiences, challenges and visions for the future". We place special emphasis on the integration of education, research, and clinical practice, as well as the development of modern approaches in midwifery care.
We invite contributions from midwives from clinical settings, university teachers, researchers, obstetricians, and other professionals whose work contributes to the development of midwifery and the quality of care for women, newborns, and families. We accept contributions that address clinical practice, education, competency development, research, and the broader social and health context of midwifery.
Proposed topics:
- Connecting education and clinical practice in midwifery (clinical training, student mentoring, cooperation with higher education institutions and clinical settings).
- Development of academic education of midwives in Slovenia (historical overview, key milestones, development of the study program).
- Development of midwives' competencies in modern perinatal care (autonomy, professional responsibility, interdisciplinary cooperation).
- Modern approaches in midwifery education (simulations, digital learning environments, innovative pedagogical methods).
- Quality and safety of perinatal care (evidence-based practice, improving the quality of care)
- The role of midwives in the modern health system (professional identity, autonomy, team cooperation).
- Research in midwifery (development of research culture, inclusion of midwives in research work).
