Abstract

The article deals with the problem of sexual violence at work place. Some results of the research study on the presence of sexual violence/harassment againts nurses at work place in Slovenia are presented. The inquiry took place in October and November 1999 on a sample of 376 respondents – nurses and nursing technicians. The resuls reveal that nurses and nursing technicians do encounter sexual violence/harassment at their work place. The main perpetrators are doctors and patients, most often time period is morning. These events often pass unnoticed or nurses confide them to their coworkers. The reults of the inquiry show that in case of such events, the nurses would prefer to be able to get some counseling as a form of help. The article also present the measures which were undertaken as the result of the inquiry. The actions of the Non-violence in Nursing Group and the Ombudsman for Nursing Profession are aimed at reduction of instances of violence in nursing care. As most of the Slovenian health institutions do not have specific protocols for the treatment of act of violence, a holistic and systematic approach which would include managers, workers and civil society is required.
