Vitamin supplements use in nutrition

Abstract

In the article two major fields of vitamin and mineral research are presented. The literature overwiev was performed regarding the role of vitamins and minerals in the prevention of malignant and cardiovascular diseases. Studies investigating the impact of vitamin supplement use could not confirm their protective effect in the prevention of general mortality, cardiovascular and malignant diseases. Regarding the vitamin and mineral supplement intake among inquired inhabitants of Slovenia the results of the study are presented. Investigation among randomly chosen people in five Slovenian cities was performed in order to find out the habits of vitamin and mineral supplements usage. 12 % of investigated population daily uses of vitamin and mineral supplements, 27 % weekly and 38 % only in special occasions (illness). Among regular users 63 % is consuming of vitamin and mineral supplements already several years. Prevailing reason for the use of vitamin and mineral supplements is their effect on illness resistance (48 %), second cause is physical activity increase (12.8 %), increase in the productivity and concentration (11.4 %) and the influence on the good mood (9.4 %). Half of the inquired believe that vitamin and mineral supplements usage will have positive effect on their health. 22 % agrees that due to modern food processing bought food is lacking vitamins and minerals, although 86 % of the inquired inhabitants are aware that fruit and vegetable should be consumed as well.
