Abstract

The article deals with patients’ rights and stresses the right of autonomy as one of fundamental patient’s rights in holistic individual patient treatment. In the first part, some concepts like ethics, morale, autonomy, advocacy, informing, patient’s consent are discussed. The second part presents a research project of the Nurses and Nursing Technicians Association Ljubljana Nursing care and Ethics. The author tried to find an answer to the question: What is patient’s autonomy? Gathered data were analysed with a qualitative method and classified into 20 categories from which the first five cover the majority of answers. In the author’s opinion, the field of nursing ethics in Slovenia requires further interpretation and, above all, transfer of ethical principles into practice.
