Abstract

Introduction: With being highly intense, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, strongly influenced the conditions and work in intensive care units. The need for pronation (laying on stomach) was advised in inreasingly more intubated patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. The purpose of the study was to present the role of health care workers during pronation and supination (laying on back) and to highlight the most common complications that can occur.
Methods: A review of the scientific and professional literature was used. The search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Sage and ScienceDirect. We also searched for literature using the Google Scholar web browser. Surveys from January 2020 to December 2021 were included. A substantive analysis of the surveys was performed.
Results: 993 articles were identified in the PubMed, Sage and ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases.From 1003 identified publications, eight articles were included in the final analysis. The research data were divided into three main categories: (1) The role of health care workers before the pronation of an intubated patient; (2) The role of health care workers during the pronation of an intubated patient; (3) The role of health care workers in supination of an intubated patient.
Discussion and conclusion: Pronation and suspination of an intubated patient is a significant challenge for the entire medical team that faces fewer numbers of working staff who are also less qualified. During such an intervention, the health care worker must ensure hemodynamic stability, correct positioning, prevent extubation and loss of various catheters, protect the skin and perform the necessary nursing activities throughout.
