Introduction: The aim of the research, based on a literature review, is to present and analyse the results, the purpose of which was to determine the effects of nutritional therapies in the prevention of the metabolic syndrome. Methods: Comparative, cross-sectional and longitudinal researches, published in the last decade in electronic databases Medline and CINAHL, have been used for literature review and analysis. Total number of hits was 166, for further analysis 5 studies were included. The inclusion selection criterion of the studies was that data for all five risk factors of metabolic syndrome and nutritional therapy were encompassed. Results: The results of the dietary therapy studies showed that the greatest emphasis on lifestyle changes was given to: a healthy balanced diet, Mediterranean diet, Mediterranean diet with a lower intake of carbohydrates, conventional diet for diabetics and lacto - vegetarian diet. A diet with low carbohydrate intake, low calorie diet and a diet high in carbohydrates and low energy intake mainly focused on nutritional therapy and showed no relevant guidelines for lifestyle change. The selected five studies show a statistically significant effect of dietary treatments on weight reduction (p < 0.001). Discussion and conclusion: The studies conducted so far focused solely on the individual factor of metabolic syndrome on health. However, the influence of all five factors in combination with nutritional therapy has not been researched yet.Downloads
