Introduction: Nursing personnel experience numerous mental, emotional, and physical stressors that influence their job satisfaction. Occupational stress often results from demanding work conditions and represents a global concern in nursing. The aim of this literature review was to examine the effectiveness of clinical supervision in maintaining job satisfaction among nursing personnel.
Methods: A descriptive literature review was conducted using analysis, comparison, and synthesis of relevant studies. Scientific literature was searched in PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science in November 2024. The final analysis included quantitative and qualitative studies and systematic literature reviews published in English and relevant to the research topic. Studies were evaluated using a hierarchy of evidence, classified by level, and summarised in evaluation and synthesis tables.
Results: The literature search yielded 106 records, of which seven studies met the inclusion criteria, including four original scientific articles and three literature reviews. One study was classified at the third level of evidence, one at the fourth level, one at the fifth level, one at the sixth level, and three at the seventh level. The findings indicate that clinical supervision positively affects healthcare professionals and contributes to maintaining and improving job satisfaction.
Discussion and conclusion: Although clinical supervision is not widely implemented in nursing practice, it plays an important role in supporting job satisfaction. Identified limitations included small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and potential bias. This review improves understanding of the effects of supervision on nursing personnel, highlights gaps in existing research, and may inform educational programmes and policy development aimed at improving supervisory practices and working conditions in nursing.
