Introduction: The availability of quality mental health care remains constrained by geographic disparities, workforce shortages, and persistent stigma. This scoping review critically examines the advantages and limitations of implementing telemedicine and telepsychiatry in psychiatric consultations and therapeutic settings.
Methods: A scoping literature review was conducted, including analysis and synthesis of individual studies. A literature search using Boolean operators and relevant keywords ("telepsychiatry," "benefits," "disadvantages," "psychotherapy") was conducted in the PubMed, CINAHL, PsycArticles, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. Studies published within the past decade were considered for review.
Results: The finding were categorised into one central theme and five subthemes: technological challenges, external disturbances, barriers to therapeutic relationships, improved accessibility, and enhanced quality of care. Telepsychiatry was found to increase patient access and convenience, particularly in rural areas, but raised concerns regarding the depth of therapeutic engagement and privacy safeguards.
Discussion and conclusion: Telemedicine and telepsychiatry offer promising pathways for expanding access to mental health services and enhancing patient-centred care. However, significant challenges persist, necessitating further empirical investigation and structural adaptations to ensure their effective integration into routine clinical practice.
